I grew up in Hope, B.C. And did not know anything about this internment camp until I was in my 20’s and living in Vancouver. I was 7 years old when the war was over ( born in 1938) and I went to school with lots of Japanese kids and no one ever said anything, not our fellow Japanese students and not any of our parents or any other adults. The adults may have been ashamed – they should have been. A very shameful time in the history or the U.S and Canada.

Thanks for your comment, Pat! I think many of the evacuees still ponder over what their non-Japanese background friends, neighbours, coworkers, and other acquaintances thought of what was going on at that time, and how best to bring all Canadians into this discussion going forward. I appreciate the input!
